And yeah, I usually keep everything on one layer, I think it's much easier to paint like that. If this was an actual painting I'd probably even have the sphere on the same layer as the background; I prefer being able to control my edges just by painting and not have to worry about masks or anything. There's nothing wrong with layers, but I think it's important to at least learn to work without them so you can use them as a tool and not as a crutch for fear of making mistakes. :)

@07:23Yeah, the more complex the form is the trickier it becomes. The best thing to do is do lots of studies from reference and learn the planes of the face until you could draw it like an architect in any position, when you have that understanding lighting and shading will be much easier.

@00:03Sweet, I'm glad it was helpful to ya! Sometimes just using the right tools is all that's needed to get started in the right direction.

And no, I haven't done a tutorial on fur; though I typically try to avoid such specific tutorials like that. Better to teach general concepts that can be applied to many different things. My suggestion is to take the info from this blending tutorial, grab some photo reference of fur, and spend a good amount of time painting it until you feel you've really captured the texture and effect. The best way to learn about materials is to observe from reality; so life or photography is gonna be your best friend more than any tutorial would. Perhaps even trace a photograph of a dog and try to copy the rendering in the photo, being *very* careful and taking your time, not just throwing down lines haphazardly. Think about big, overall shapes, values, and colors, think about why it looks the way it does, get everything blocked in then add some detail and edge-work to get the effect of fur. Really invest in it and do as best as you can and you'll learn a ton, and be able to do it better from imagination!

You have to be given deviantFilm privileges to be able to submit videos to dA. They don't want dA turning in to youtube, so they're more strict with their submission process. In order to get privileges, you have to be invited by an administrator or someone who already has them. You can request an invitation, as I did, by showing an example of your videos. I got my privileges from `FallenRox. :3

@09:47Thank you very much.
I usually use about three layers, say 3 for hair, 3 for skin etc.
like 1 for base, 1 for shadow and 1 for highlights.
Everything tends to mix together whenever I attempt to use a single layer.
But I think I'll have an experiment, thanks again!

Okay, so. I got deviantfilm privileges the other day (thanks Fallenrox! :D) and wanted to give it a test.

So, I made a quick, crappy video tutorial about basic blending. It's not very well-thought out or exciting, it's really just a test of deviantfilm to see how everything works out. I'll upload much better-planned tutorials in the future, but for now I hope you enjoy this one.

Feel free to suggest something for my next tutorial, or crit, or comment, or whatever. :)

(Also, please excuse the awful the video and audio sync; for some reason Camtasia won't record through my camera, so I had to record the video with Camtasia, the audio with Wavepad, and put them together. The result is somewhat mish-mashed.)

Edit:

Oh mai GAWD! Daily Deviation! Bwuargh!!!! Thanks so much, guys, it's wonderful to see this tutorial really lifting off like this. I'll be sure to make more, very soon!

Basic Blending Tutorial by ~Andantonius ...video takes you into a tutorial that shows you how he comes up with his amazing digital works. This video not only teaches you how to blend with digital painting but also how to add light effects the right way. It is absolutely awesome to have video tutorials like this to help further the learning and growth of the artistic talent in the dA community! ( Suggested by witchiamwill and Featured by KariAnnLax )

This put together in one place all the necessary elements for using that horrible color picker. The technique of how to coordinate hue variation with value and saturation for lighting/shading zones of local color is something we encounter repeatedly in demos and tutorials, and, for some reason, it's so much easier to understand in silent demonstration compared to when it's put in words.  (That might be due to who's putting it in words. XD.)

The color blocking preceding blending is something that I haven't previously done consciously/carefully.  I tend to jump right to blending, which is fine when I get it right the first time . . . but when does that happen?  LOL  It is interesting to see how the blending is set up in the blocking stage, so that one little error of judgement in blending won't mean having to strip down and start building up, again.

For you these things are likely too basic to merit gratitude.  But everyone has gaps in knowledge and ability; for some they represent major stumbling blocks that, when overcome with someone's help, facilitate frustrated ability.  So this was a great little demo.
