Here's a study for today, practicing figures both drawn and painted! It was actually kinda funny, I decided on a whim to paint these higher-key than the reference and see what happened, and limiting the value range actually forced me to think a lot more about which property of light I was painting at all times, and I think I actually learned more and got better results from it. Gonna have to do this more often!

Also playing with lost edges, cause I suck at them. Droar!

These are great! The edges actually look okay to me. There are some places where it looks like they should maybe be a little softer, but these are great studies!

And yeah, I agree; I need to get bolder with soft/lost edges. That's what the practice is for I guess. =P

No prob :) Once you go really soft it's difficult to pull back, because the skin is such a soft/translucent surface. It seems like you are just over correcting a little haha, you'll get it down! I tend to go too soft, would love to have some of whatever it is you're doing!

what sites do you use for some of your reference material? Or do you go to a figure drawing class to do your studies? (Either way they're gorgeous.)

I do go to a figure class, but all these are from photo ref. I get ref mostly from Pixelovely, figuresfordrawing tumblr, dynamic poses on pinterest, characterdesigns.com, and dA. :)

What are lost edges ?

Essentially it's obliterating any separation where you would normally expect an 'outline' to be. For instance, look at the top left painted figure, see how her leg, the shadow on the ground, and the box are all just one value bleeding in to each other? In the line drawing you can clearly see where her thigh is seated on the ground, but in the painting I let that be a lost edge to add the effect of 'air' and atmosphere.

It's an important tool to learn, because that's how our eyes see. We're not like cameras with everything super in focus, things outside our focal distance get blurred, and often times one object will get lost in to another, so adding lost edges helps it to feel more lifelike. :)

These reallly are very lovely.. I have a love for sketches and exercises. It really lets you see the artists energy and thought process. Viewing this inspires me to work on figures myself - specifically male, which I avoid at all cost.

Thanks! I love looking at artists' exercises as well, gives you a little glimpse behind the curtain.
And yeah, practicing both genders is important, you never know what a client's gonna ask for. :)
