Photoshop Pencil Brush by Andantonius Photoshop Pencil Brush by Andantonius
Here's a tasty and stylish pencil brush for all your photoshop sketching needs! Have nearly all the deliciousness of real pencil on paper minus the paper and plus the undo (but real men just erase and redraw, like a boss).

This brush for PS is handy for doing more visually interesting sketches that can add a nice layer of texture for you to paint on top of, as well as just making nicer looking digital drawings. Get some grit in those lines!

TO INSTALL:

1. Download the Pencil_Brush_by_Andantonius.abr file by pressing, "Download" to the right of this deviation.

2. Copy Pencil_Brush_by_Andantonius.abr to /Adobe/Adobe Photoshop (Path may vary depending on operating system, and, "Adobe Photoshop" will change depending on what version you have)

3. Start (Or restart if it's already open) Photoshop.

4. To select the pencil brush, simply click on the arrow on the right-hand side of the brush selection menu. Then, from the drop-down menu, select, "Pencil".

5. Draw till your fingers bleed!

Edit:

*Quack*

Daily Deviation! I totally would have never expected that on this thing. Thank you so much guys for all your nice comments and faves, and also a big thank you to `Rose-Rayne for suggesting it, and to `LawrenceDeDark for featuring it!

Thanks so much everybody!

double edit:

I finally replaced that dreadful preview image with an actually semi-decent drawing, a quick study of a Prud'hon figure. I also removed all the business about the sketch paper action from both the download and the description cause it was confusing and not actually very helpful. The brush itself is still the same, just with a nicer example of its usage and a less confusing installation process! Enjoy! :)

Thank you so much for this. I'm not much of a brush maker myself. I had need of a pencil brush to make some edits to old pencil work without making it look like there were edits to begin with. Your brush was fit for the task, matching my old pencils perfectly. Thanks again.

You, or anyone who reads this, wouldn't possibly know if this is a brush that can still work if you install it in GIMP instead of PS, or would you? :'D *has on free drawing programs 'cause she's poor*

probably not. gimp and photshop dosnt even work in the same way with brushes what I know. but try it out?

or download PS from some torrent site. I think most of personal hobby artists just download it illegally... because heck PS is expenssive!

Hi, there! I've been using your pencil brush for about two years now, and haven't gotten tired of using it since! However, I have a bit of a question, because I just wanted to make sure, because I've been using it a lot;

Would it be alright if anyone used this brush for professional work, like for commissions and such? I await your answer with a "thank you" on standby! =D

This looks exactly what I need, but I'm encountering the same problem I've had for years while using Photoshop: my lines simply don't look as defined and dark as those shown on the preview. What am I doing wrong? My strokes always look too fuzzy/blurred, and instead of black, they come out more of a mid-tone grey. I'm using the brush without any tweaks to its settings.

As I mentioned, I've had this issue pretty much since I began using Photoshop years ago. It doesn't seem to matter how large or small a canvas I work on. I'm using a Wacom Intuos 3, if that helps? Could it be my tablet settings doing this? If so, what should I change?

Any help would be absolutely, massively appreciated, because I'd love to put this problem to rest once and for all!

That's actually something I noticed personally while using this brush, I usually have to push it a little harder and layer a few strokes on top of each other to get a really full darkness.

If it's happening with your other brushes though I would say:
1. Check your opacity / flow / brush settings. Make sure they're all at 100% and Wet Edges isn't turned on or anything like that.
2. Check your tablet settings. I personally increase the sensitivity of my pen quite a bit so a much lighter touch is required to be considered 100% pressure, so you might just have yours turned up to the point where pressing hard enough to reach 100% is uncomfortable so you're not doing it.

Thank you. :) My settings were okay, the problem was my canvas size: it was too small. The brush - any brush - at 100% zoom looks blurry. When I mistakenly attempted to produce a tighter line by reducing the brush size, that's when it would become faint.

Since remembering to always work at 200-300 DPI, I've not had any problems. :)
