Photoshop Pencil Brush by Andantonius Photoshop Pencil Brush by Andantonius
Here's a tasty and stylish pencil brush for all your photoshop sketching needs! Have nearly all the deliciousness of real pencil on paper minus the paper and plus the undo (but real men just erase and redraw, like a boss).

This brush for PS is handy for doing more visually interesting sketches that can add a nice layer of texture for you to paint on top of, as well as just making nicer looking digital drawings. Get some grit in those lines!

1. Download the Pencil_Brush_by_Andantonius.abr file by pressing, "Download" to the right of this deviation.

2. Copy Pencil_Brush_by_Andantonius.abr to /Adobe/Adobe Photoshop (Path may vary depending on operating system, and, "Adobe Photoshop" will change depending on what version you have)

3. Start (Or restart if it's already open) Photoshop.

4. To select the pencil brush, simply click on the arrow on the right-hand side of the brush selection menu. Then, from the drop-down menu, select, "Pencil".

5. Draw till your fingers bleed!

Daily Deviation! I totally would have never expected that on this thing. Thank you so much guys for all your nice comments and faves, and also a big thank you to `Rose-Rayne for suggesting it, and to `LawrenceDeDark for featuring it!

Thanks so much everybody!

double edit:

I finally replaced that dreadful preview image with an actually semi-decent drawing, a quick study of a Prud'hon figure. I also removed all the business about the sketch paper action from both the download and the description cause it was confusing and not actually very helpful. The brush itself is still the same, just with a nicer example of its usage and a less confusing installation process! Enjoy! :)

Thanks for this. Using it for a while, and the unmistakable, almost visceral feeling  of using a pencil sort of seeped in while I was testing it out.

This looks exactly what I need, but I'm encountering the same problem I've had for years while using Photoshop: my lines simply don't look as defined and dark as those shown on the preview. What am I doing wrong? My strokes always look too fuzzy/blurred, and instead of black, they come out more of a mid-tone grey. I'm using the brush without any tweaks to its settings.

As I mentioned, I've had this issue pretty much since I began using Photoshop years ago. It doesn't seem to matter how large or small a canvas I work on. I'm using a Wacom Intuos 3, if that helps? Could it be my tablet settings doing this? If so, what should I change?

Any help would be absolutely, massively appreciated, because I'd love to put this problem to rest once and for all!

That's actually something I noticed personally while using this brush, I usually have to push it a little harder and layer a few strokes on top of each other to get a really full darkness.

If it's happening with your other brushes though I would say:
1. Check your opacity / flow / brush settings. Make sure they're all at 100% and Wet Edges isn't turned on or anything like that.
2. Check your tablet settings. I personally increase the sensitivity of my pen quite a bit so a much lighter touch is required to be considered 100% pressure, so you might just have yours turned up to the point where pressing hard enough to reach 100% is uncomfortable so you're not doing it.

Thank you. :) My settings were okay, the problem was my canvas size: it was too small. The brush - any brush - at 100% zoom looks blurry. When I mistakenly attempted to produce a tighter line by reducing the brush size, that's when it would become faint.

Since remembering to always work at 200-300 DPI, I've not had any problems. :)
Andantonius Featured By Owner Jul 16, 2015  Professional Digital Artist
Ah yeah, that'll definitely do it. I usually try and keep my canvas size so that my brushes never need to go smaller than 5px.

Glad you got it figured out!

Could you save a file that you're having this issue on and post it somewhere I could download? Might help diagnose the problem... can't really tell just from your description.
TeachingMyselfSpeed Featured By Owner Jul 7, 2015  Hobbyist Digital Artist
It's difficult... I seem to notice (and be frustrated by) it on occasions when I'm just trying to sketch something, but when I've tried to replicate it to demonstrate the problem to somebody, it's either less apparent, or totally fine.

It might be to do with canvas size? I notice the issue when I work at 100% zoom, but less so at 50%, 33% etc. I'd usually reduce the brush size in an attempt to tighten the lines, but doing so on a brush that's already so small (yours here is 3px by default) only serves to make the lines even weaker.

But I have a sneaking suspicion that this issue is only plaguing me when I neglect to change Photoshop's default canvas DPI. In recent months I've been working in 200 DPI, and have noticed the issue much less. So I think maybe a combination of larger canvas, plus bigger brushes, might solve the problem. But I'd need to test and experiment for a while to be sure.

I greatly appreciate your offer to examine my issue more closely. :) The next time I run into it, I'll save a snap.

Okay, well with that info your problem might have been making your brushes too small. When you use a textured brush, making the size less than 100% causes photoshop to have to downsample the texture for the brush tip, which when you go small enough means that all the crisp texture is lost and it becomes blurry. To avoid that just make sure you use a high-ish resolution document and keep your brushes at a decent size.

At least, that's what I assume was happening. Not sure :P

I'm not the author of the brush BTW, just saw your comment when I was looking at it and thought I might be able to help :)
