Nest of the Earth Drake by Andantonius Nest of the Earth Drake by Andantonius
Edit- check out the walkthrough for this here: [link]

Here's my final for the Environment of the Week challenge over on conceptart, the one hundred and sixty seventh of a long and illustrious line of EoWs to be exact.

The challenge was to create an elemental dragon hatchery, so after a really bad sketch for a water/ice one I switched to earth and sketched out this which seemed pretty cool so I took it to final. Only had like two days to finish it due to a weird week of not doing stuff and doing other stuff, but I'm pretty happy with how it came out, I think I'm starting to settle in to a painting process... for now, at least.

Also I actually remembered to save progress shots of this one, so I'll toss up a walkthrough for it pretty soon.

Hope ya dig it!

Those trees have to be enormous if those deer are really that small! :XD:
Amazing work

That's some huge grass if I do say so-- the only thing that really bothered me about this piece actually was when I noticed those deer. If you were going for more scope I would have toned things down a bit more,in the background, removed that grass and blew it up as an unfocused object in the foreground maybe, but this is still a beautiful piece, and you have shown tons of growth in your work this year!

Yeah, the scale is definitely a big issue here. The deer were kind of last-minute and in retrospect are a bit of a cop-out, the scene needs to read as large without them and they'll just emphasize the point. Definitely agree with your suggestions; the huge-ass grass is actually foreground, but I just noticed the dumb shadow from the tree is merging seamlessly with the shadow of the log so I totally killed the space. Paying-attention fail, hah.
Thanks very much! :)

Hey Andan, this is really awesome! I love the scale of it, but I think you could definitely have made the deer slightly more apparent; it took me a long while to find them so until I did I thought this thing was about waist-high. Could also be because we're looking down on the scene, perhaps if the horizon line was way lower it would have looked even more enormous? :3 Regardless, this is great, I love your rendering and use of color!

Thanks, Lhuuuuuune!
And I agree wi'choo critique completely; the deer were kind of thrown in last minute and kind of wonked things up, they definitely need to be better integrated. I'm still rather new to environments so getting scale appropriate and obvious is gonna take some learnin, lowering the horizon would definitely help exaggerate it.
Thanks for ze feedback! I'll a-work on it! :3

At first I thought it looked very homey and small, but then I saw the deer and realized just how HUGE this thing is. xD Lovely colours and textures, Andan. Great work as always. ^^
