Here's a copy of a piece by the mighty illustrator Norman Rockwell, done for head painting class.
This one was quite tricky to do, but I think overall it's one of my most successful attempts with oil. A lot of time went in to getting the initial drawing correct before any painting took place, and that helped a ton. Also learned a lot about mixing color and modeling form with oil, as well as facial features and their planes because Rockwell is sooo clear with his forms, really great to study.
If you want you can check the sketch out on my blog: [link]
I think this painting is absolutely fabulous - the colours, the texture - everything is spot on. You have even managed to give it your own style, intentionally or not
Don't forget to mix in complimentary colors to desaturate those colors! His upper lip is a little thick, as is his nose, and the colors appear to be too saturated, but other than that, it's a good painting. Oil can be tricky but with much time put into it it turns into a very rich painting.
Yeah, totally, that was my biggest issue with this. My teacher gave me a paintover yesterday though, did some scumbling and toned down the saturation, so I'm gonna go back in to it on Monday and clean it up some and we'll see what happens. Gotta keep practicing 'dem color mixing skills.
Really well done!
