Figure Painting 002by ~Andantonius

Here's another oil figure painting for class. This one was done from life, which was a lot of fun and quite challenging. It has it's advantages and disadvantages to working from photography; the good thing is that you can see form much more clearly and you can see a lot more color variation in the skin. The tricky thing is that it sticks you on a time limit, which is bad cause it can create some panic, but good because it forces you to work smartly and not noodle away at things that don't need to be noodled at. It's also good that the model has to take breaks which gives you the perfect opportunity to step back and analyze your piece, rather than just going on auto-pilot and making a bunch of mistakes that you don't notice until the end.

I tried to push the color on this one a little more than the previous; messing around with a bit more saturation and using a stronger separation of temperatures. I think overall it worked out pretty well and I learned a lot; still a long ways to go though, I want to keep pushing my figure painting until reaching like Jacob Collins level, which.... might take a few years, haha. But, I look forward to every step of the way!

Oil on canvas board, 16"x20", 6 hours

Thanks! And yeah, figure painting's a blast. You can totally do it from photos though, don't necessarily need a class. :)

I HEART THIS SO BAD you have no idea. (omg is Jacob Collins even human? you have to ask yourself)
Great colors and atmosphere. It's really rough around the edges/ but those things can be cleaned up easily ; ' 0
By the wayyyy, what solution did you use for thinning out/mixing your paint here? Liquin/linseed oil/mineral spirits? : '0

Haha, thanks!

And yeah, Jacob Collins is probably an alien. or that's what I tell myself when I cry looking at his work compared to mine. =P

And yeah, I agree, edgework is one of the biggest struggles I've been having with oils so far, it's like painting with a 100% opacity brush pretty much. But I'm sure it's just a matter of practice.

And I just used linseed oil, I like it's consistency, it does the job, and it's not as likely to explode or poison you, haha. Liquin can come in handy if you need faster drying, but for studies like these I don't really care; and I only use mineral spirits after the painting's done to clean brushes, and just grab a new brush during the painting if I need a clean one.
