Figure Drawing 011 by Andantonius Figure Drawing 011 by Andantonius
Here's some figure drawings for a couple of classes we've got this semester with Ron Lemen which are aweeeesome. We're going through a crazy cool constructive approach starting off with a big focus on gesture and we're gonna start adding muscles on to them gradually as we go.

These are really helpful analysis to do, they take about 10-15 minutes each but I can already tell they've boosted my figure game like crazy. Especially the red lines, which are finding rhythms that connect different elements together to make the figure feel dynamic and in motion.

Gonna crunch on these and hopefully finally solidify my imaginative figure drawing by the end of the semester. Learnings gooooo!

Is there a name for the technique with the red lines I could look up?

In general it's called rhythmical drawing; I think Frank Reilly has done the most extensive work on it, but the only online resource I had of his seems to have been taken down so I'm not quite sure where you could find it, my guess would be that animation books would be most likely to talk about it. [link] I've heard is good, though I haven't read it myself, you might see if you can find it locally and it might have some similar information.

Actually if you check out the ImagineFX Anatomy issue, the whole human figure section is Ron's work, definitely worth getting if you want to up your figure game. He also has a few tutorials on conceptart.org and a couple gnomon dvds.

Thank you! *kiss* The Gnomon DVDs are pure gold! It has been a few years since I last googled Ron, and I didn't know these DVDs existed. The Reilly's abstraction on the face is exactly what I need! I have this in print or on file from a lot of different artists (Jeff Watts and Kevin Chen among them), but I want to see it done "live", so I can understand how the construction is begun and executed. I'll definitely get those DVDs. Thank you very much, that was one helpful comment :-)
