But yeah, here's another figure painting. This one was from a life, a 3 hour pose. I still need lots of work on the drawing side, but apart from some over-rendering in spots I think the painting side turned out quite well. It was good to do it from life as well, I got a lot of practice in on the color theory we've been learning in head painting class; such as noticing (and exaggerating) the blue flourescent light filling the up-planed shadows, and reflected light from other parts of the body being really warm. Overall I'm feeling much more confident with lighting and creating logical reasons for color choices, so once I get decent at drawing I should be in business.
Was this all from life, background too? I agree about the light---it looks great, very warm. I also like the sketched-out feet. Her right shoulder and breast also look good (harrumph, in a strictly artistic sense, of course), especially the little fold of skin at the armpit. There's something not quite right about the left breast, though, and the neck and head look kind of masculine. Of course, I don't know what this woman looks like in real life---maybe I'm not critiquing her and not you. Oh, and I like the way the light on her body draws the eye away from the background. Very nice.
The figure was from life, the background was made up as abstraction, just to add a bit of composition to it. Thanks muchly! And I see what you mean about the breast, it's not following the form of the torso quite right. And yeah, the head's much more masculine than she really is, which is my own fault for not spending enough time studying faces and doing face gestures. Plus I was trying to figure out the perspective and it ended up making her more angular.
Hehe, thanks. I guess what I mean is that everything's relative; I can draw fairly well, but not nearly as well as I paint, and that's always been what holds my images back.
sick man

You're beyond decent, sir. <3
What you're saying with blue in the shadow, everyone at NSCAD does with green. It's cool though, both ways.
And yeah, I think technically flourescents are blue-green so we're both right muahaha.
