Long time no post! Still in a bit of debate as to how much sketchy stuff I want to toss up here; I think it'd be good to post more unfinished stuff but I just can't be arsed. xD
But anyways, this is an illustration for our honors program, this one's an editorial illustration for an article about a death row warden. Pretty crazy shtuff.
This is actually my first finished oil illustration, which was a lot of fun, I think I'm starting to figure out how to apply my digital color knowledge to paint which is the one thing that always bugged me about traditional art before. Definitely gonna try and do more finished work in oil, it's so tactile and delicious.
Also playing around a lot more with graphic design elements as opposed to just rendering everything representationally, it's an exciting new frontier!
And that's all! Have fun, hopefully I'll have something else to post before November, haha.
Oil on canvas board, 20 hours, corrections in Painter and PS
Wow! What a lot of interesting ideas all in one picture/post! Keep us in mind with the updates.
Meanwhile, specifically this is a really compelling piece. I love how you used the masses of black and then how the red is highlighted in the pen and paper. As the warden signs documents that potentially send people to hell! What a thought-provoking work.
Do yo feel like that too? I always want to show people my work but then theyll stare over your shoulder and all my drawing/painting skill diminishes. :/
Great piece, the crop works nicely, it draws your eye around the painting nicely. The design elements are really paying off, your ideas that you're communicating show immediately, well they did for me at least. :d
Haha, not really, I work in a studio with 10 other artists so there's always someone walking around and standing over my shoulder. It's something you just kinda get used to after a while, a lot of it has to do with being confident knowing that everything goes through an ugly stage and it's ok for people to not be that impressed.

Otherwise, I think we all can relate to the sketch vs finished work posts, sketches are fun, but it takes forever to post a hundred sketches D:
And yeah, agree.

keep up the awesome work.
And thanks very much! I'm glad you like it!
